Sonargaon originally called Shornogram or Shubarnogram, and denotes the ancient territory of Bengal. It was the former capital of Bengal from 13th century to 17th century. Sonargaon means “Golden Village”. One of the tribal groups of people named Shornobhusitah lived in this area. Literally meaning ‘dressed up with gold’ and signifying that all the people’s men and women used to adorn themselves with gold. This was a thriving administrative, commercial and maritime centre of Bengal. This place was described by world famous globe trotter including, Ibn Battuta (from Morocco), Ralph Fitch (from England), Ma Huan (from China) and Niccolo de Conti from (from Venice, Italy) as a thriving headquarters for trade and commerce of eastern province of Bengal.

You will visit here a beautiful River Island (Char), bamboo made school, Panam City (Panam Nagor), Sonargaon folk art and craft museum; a beautiful tiny mosque built in medieval time by local spiritual man in 1519.

    08:00 – 08:00 AM: Pick up from your Hotel. Drive to Sonargaon which is 45 kilometers away from Dhaka
    09:30 – 11:00 AM: Take a boat and cross one of the powerful rivers called ‘Meghna River’. Visit a Char (a tract of land surrounded by the waters of river, sea, or stream), you will see extremely rural area where people living with limited facilities and you will explore village life activities, their local culture and tradition.
    11:10 – 11:30 AM: Visit a Bamboo made elementary school which is built basically for destitute children in a lower class Hindu community. You could bring some candy for them which will make them extremely happy.
    11:35 – 12:15 PM: Panam City (Panam Nagor) is now fully an abandoned city. The existing brick buildings of Panam nagor, obviously the residence of the Hindu Merchant-Talukdars (aristocrats who formed the ruling class during the Mughal Empire and British times), can be dated back to early nineteenth, and the later ones to late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s. Panam nagor which developed in the nineteenth century, continued to flourish till the end of the Second World War.
    12:20 – 01:20 PM: Visit Sonargaon folk art and craft museum you will see here folks art and handicraft staffs all together 4,518 different objects collected from different times from 17th century to late of 20th century. Also you will visit Bara Sardar Bari. This place could have built 400 years ago during the reign of Baro Bhuiyan in Bengal (1538-1612)
    01:30 – 01:50 PM: Visit Goaldi Mosque one of the beautiful surviving monuments built in 1519 by Mulla Hizabar Akbar Khan during the reign of Alauddin Husain Shah
    02:10 – 02:55 PM: Lunch in a local restaurant (taste authentic Bangladeshi traditional dishes)
    04:45 – 05:15 PM: Drive back to your hotel and say good bye. End the Old Capital Tour.

Folk Art and Craft Museum is closed on Wednesday and Thursday, if you visit on these days then you could have a look them from outside. Rest of the sites is open every day.
Since local people don’t see many foreign tourists they might be a bit curious but are very friendly and cooperative peoples. Please be polite to the local people.
Please be respectful of Bangladeshi culture and tradition because you may encounter situations different from your own tradition and culture.
Be prepared to face some traffic congestion on the highway except Public Holidays, Friday and Saturday.
